RIP: Dr. Joseph Windham

It is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that our colleague and my dear friend, Dr. Joseph Windham, passed away on December 7, 2014, while in hospice care. We had a memorial service on campus with friends, students and faculty at the Alexandria campus. When one of the students spoke up of her memories of Joe, she referenced the Women, War and Peace Conference and how Dr. Windham arranged for her parents to come along on the bus that Joe drove to the conference. Also in attendance at the Memorial today was Dr. Shonette Grant, our colleague who brought some of our African literature students along with her.

It is my intention to ask Dr. Grant to work with me on our Year Three gathering here at NOVA Alexandria and perhaps another colleague as well. We are devastated by the loss of our colleague, Joseph Windham, who came to NOVA the same year that I did and who built our African-American and our African History offerings from the ground up. He was a student-centered scholar and he will be sorely missed.

Sincerely,

Laura L. Franklin
